In a bizarre new interview, reggae singer Shaggy has spoken about his hatred of the Islamic State and his brilliant plan for defeating the organisation: make them listen to his music.
Then give them a joint.
The 46-year-old, whose real name is Orville Richard Burrell, is best known for ’90s and 2000s hits like Boombastic and It Wasn’t Me. This week, in an interview with the Miami New Times, he also revealed himself to be quite the political thinker.
“ISIS can go f–k themselves,” the Jamaican-born singer said. “That’s some crazy s–t what they’re doing. It’s horrible, man.”
“I don’t get that much hate. I just don’t get that level of evil. I can’t understand it.”
Shaggy offered a surprisingly simple formula for world peace.
“If you’re able to cut a man’s head off, you’re sick. But right, music evokes emotion. So if they’re listening to Shaggy music or reggae music, they’re not going to want to cut somebody’s head off.”
“There’re two things you want to do when you listen to reggae: You get somebody pregnant, or you’re f**king high. High people don’t want to kill nothing; they want to love.”
The Grammy Award-winner went further, suggesting someone needed to distribute marijuana and Bob Marley CDs amongst the militants.
“They need to bag some Jamaican weed and distribute it amongst ISIS. I guarantee there won’t be any more wars out there,” he said.
“Man, it’ll put them in a vibe. And throw some Bob Marley up in there and there’ll be peace.”
The singer continues to successfully tour the world and most recently performed in Australia in May.
He has also gone on to become a humanitarian, establishing his own charity, the Shaggy Make a Difference Foundation, which has raised $1 million for a children’s hospital in Jamaica.
