Sizzla Kalonji’s Solid As A Rock has been sampled for the third time by an American rapper. The song, released in 2002 on Sizzla’s EP entitled Da Real Thing, was first sampled by Jah Rule on his 50 Cent diss song called The Crown. The song was sampled again in 2012, this time ironically by 50 Cent on his free mix tape called 5 (Murder By Numbers). This time around, the self-proclaimed King of Rap music Jay-Z has sampled the song for his new album called Magna Carta Holy Grail.
In an effort called Crown, the song begins with Sizzla singing “They can’t keep a good man down, always keep a smile when they want me to frown, keep the vibes and I stood my ground they will never ever take my crown – who Jah bless I say no man curse”.
Solid As A Rock is over a decade old, however, its message apparently still resonates in the rap community.
In Jay-Z’s version of the song, he constantly repeats ‘Crown’ as his main hook. However, Sizzla’s voice can be heard in the background chanting “They keep fighting me without a cause trying to make my life hard, the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords giveth I reward”.
