It has been a while since British reggae singer Maxi Priest entered the Billboard charts. His new album, Easy to Love, which was released July 1 by VP Records, debuted at number two on the Billboard Reggae Album chart.
It is Priest’s first entry on any Billboard chart in 15 years. His last entry was 1999’s album Combination which peaked at number five on the publication’s reggae table.
Easy to Love, which has 11 tracks, sold 1,169 copies in its first week, according to sales tracker Nielsen Soundscan.
It features collaborations with deejay Agent Sasco and Beres Hammond. Producers who worked on the album include Steven ‘Lenky’ Marsden, Earl ‘Chinna’ Smith, Clive Hunt, Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare.
The 52-year-old Priest enjoyed a good run on Billboard charts from the late 1980s to the mid 1990s with songs such as Wild World, That Girl, Just a Little Bit Longer, House Call (with Shabba Ranks) and the chart-topping single Close to You.
His previous studio album was 2007’s Refused.
Darrio seeks talent in Suncity
Deejay Darrio got valuable exposure when he entered the Talent Friday competition a few years ago. Since then, his career has taken off with a number of hits including Siddung, School Fee and Fed Up.
The 24-year-old has decided to give back to Bull Bay, the St Andrew community where he is from. He has partnered with Matthew Mattic and FM Tech to stage a weekly talent series called Suncity Shine (formerly known as Talent Friday).
The series kicks off today and ends August 29 at Seven Miles, Bull Bay.
According to Darrio, the event’s aim is to unearth fresh talent from eastern areas like Harbour View, Bull Bay, St Thomas and Rockfort.
Winner of the grand prize will receive $20,000; record a song produced by Lion Brothers Entertainment and be interviewed on Suncity 104.9 FM.
All for GQ Rush
Soul singer GQ Rush is preparing to release his latest single, All For Me, produced by Kheilstone Music.
A major part of the song’s promotion is a video which was shot in New York.
GQ Rush says the lovers rock vibe of Sanchez, Dennis Brown and Gregory Isaacs influenced him to become a singer.
A former cabaret performer on the north coast, he released his first song, It’s in The Morning, in 2011.
Other GQ songs include My 4ever Love and Candy Crush.
